The business of coffee farming
is extremely difficult, not only due to the
backbreaking labour involved,
but also because
of the often impossibly low price paid to the
farmer for his harvest. Nearly twenty years ago
in Mexico, a group of coffee farmers and their
families were the first to try to break out of
this cycle of extreme poverty and exploitation.
With international support, they founded a
producer cooperative, and then sought to
sell their harvest directly to
consumer countries at a fair price.
Although these first steps were initially met with violent repression from local landowners,
middlemen and government, the perseverance and courage of these farmers eventually led
to the establishment of an international convention among producer cooperatives,
importers, roasters and consumers that we now know as the "Fair Trade" network.
This network is independently administered and audited by the
Fair Trade Labelling Organization (FLO) under the name "TRANSFAIR"
and is represented by the following logo:
Transfair certification is the symbol of your "Fair Trade" partnership
with hundreds of coffee farmer cooperatives around the world.
It is your guarantee that these farmers have received a fair price for their labour
to bring you the highest quality coffee.
Thanks to the efforts of these farmers and the TRANSFAIR network,
Santropol is proud to offer you a full spectrum of exquisite
organic and Fair Trade Certified gourmet coffees.
